Dragon Boating
Sat., Sept. 18, 2010, 9AM – 12PM

Troop Registration Deadline: September 3, 2010

Cost: Per Girl: $15, Per Adult: $15

Have you ever ridden a Dragon? Come see what it is all about. Girls (and adults) are broken into teams and compete against each other by racing in Dragon boats. Some girls will take turns being the drummer- making sure their teams follow the beat of the drum to win and some may be asked to steer the Dragon boat (under supervision). During breaks, water games will be played to cool off. Come join us as we explore the waterway or mangroves and occasionally see dolphins, various birds, and other wildlife.

There will be safety training and a paddle demonstration done before getting into the Dragon boats. No previous knowledge is required. Personal Floatation Devices will be provided and must be worn at all times. It’s a lot of fun and teaches girls, leaders, and parents how to work together as a team. More detailed info will be in your confirmation pack.

Location: Miami Rowing Club, 3601 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne, FL 33149

Welcome Back!

Happy ‘End-of-Summer’ to all of you!

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer break. I’m sure you’re all gearing up, getting the house ready for everyone to be ‘back-to-school’. I am still having a hard time believing how quickly summer has passed us by!

There are a couple of things that I just wanted make sure everyone is aware of as we also prepare to get back in gear for our Girl Scout Cadettes:

As Cadettes, we’ll be working on a whole new set of interest patches (IPs). These will be much more comprehensive and will take longer to complete. We will also be working on earning our Silver Award during our 2 years as Cadettes. A Silver Award workshop for girls and parents will be held to introduce everyone to the Silver Award and what it will entail. A date for this workshop will be announced at a later date.

FIRST MEETING: WEDNESDAY, September 1st beginning at 6:30pm at MY HOUSE.

Registrations:
We have turned in everyone’s girl and adult registrations to Council in time to meet the Early Bird Registration requirements. This has earned our girls a cute fun patch for the back of their vests as well as an additional monetary incentive during the winter Cookie Sale. We would like to collect your $12 registration fees at our first meeting, so be prepared with your checks (made payable to Troop 10338).

Meetings:
We will have at least 1-2 meetings per month in addition to events/outings. Last year, we did not collect any dues. I find that this hurt us financially, as the girls drive to participate in large scale events was not totally covered by our troop fundraising activities. We can address this in one of two ways… Parents pay dues in bulk ($20 every 3 months), or girls bring the single-payment dues to each meeting on their own ($4 per meeting). This will help to offset the cost of our patches, supplies, and materials. Let me know which way you’d prefer to pay for dues.

Health History Forms:
We will also be collecting our updated adult & girl health history forms (attached to the email I sent out). These forms must be completed each year. Please feel free to print and complete prior to our first meeting. There will be extra copies on hand for anyone who might need them.

Planning for Our Upcoming Year:
There are many upcoming events that have already been posted to the website. These events include IP Workshops at Council, Cadette Core Camp Weekend @ Nocatee, Dragon Boating, Movie Mania Overnighter, Mall Madness Overnighter, Archery @ Telogia, The Amazing Race Weekend @ Nocatee, The Nutcracker Ballet, etc. These events are in addition to our regularly scheduled meetings.

Parent Volunteers:
We are in desperate need of several parent volunteers. I need at least ONE mom/dad to oversee our Fall Product Sale (aka NUTS). I will also need at least TWO moms/dads that can oversee our Cookie Sale in January. Both of these will require that the parent attend our Service Unit Product Sales Training as well as storage & distribution of product from their home. I can assist and support you throughout the process, but cannot manage the entire sale on my own. They are really simple jobs, and I promise you do NOT require a tremendous amount of work. Please let me know if you can help out with either of these volunteer positions.

Thank you for being such a valuable part of our troop.
Without all of you, we wouldn’t have as much fun as we do!
